Many people are self-conscious about how they look and may want to alter certain aspects of their face in order to feel more confident. Others are born with facial abnormalities such as a cleft lip, a birthmark, or other birth defects and desire correction. Many of us notice the effects of aging, sun damage, or previous facial trauma on the face. Fortunately, many of these conditions can be corrected through procedures performed by an SNENT surgeon.
Our surgeons perform cosmetic, functional, and reconstructive surgical treatment of abnormalities of the face and neck and ear. Some procedures include deviated septum, rhinoplasty, face lift, cleft palate, drooping eyelids and ear deformities.
Cosmetic, Functional & Reconstructive
People often hear the term “facial plastic surgery” and automatically think of facial cosmetic surgery. In reality, cosmetic surgery is just one type of plastic surgery. Generally speaking, plastic surgery is any procedure to repair or reconstruct tissue in order to promote the body’s function or appearance.
The three primary types of facial plastic surgery are:
- Facial cosmetic surgery, which is performed for primarily aesthetic reasons. An example of this might be an eye lift (blepharoplasty) to correct age-related drooping and enhance the appearance of the eye.
- Facial functional surgery, which is performed to correct a defect that impairs the body’s ability to function. An example of this might be a septoplasty to fix a deviated septum and improve the patient’s ability to breathe.
- Facial reconstructive surgery, which is performed for medical reasons and rebuilds an area of the body that has been damaged. An example of this might be scar revision surgery for an individual who has suffered burns.
