If the eyes are the window to the soul, it follows that eyelids are the window dressing. And in order for our eyes to function properly and look their best, our eyelids must do the same.
Unfortunately, the skin around the eyes is extremely thin and prone to damage from the elements and the natural aging process. As the tissue and muscle surrounding the eye weaken, it can lead to drooping or sagging eyelids or the redistribution of fat deposits, causing a puffy or sunken appearance.
These issues may impact vision and/or have a premature aging effect. When this is the case, eyelid surgery is often an excellent option to help achieve better functionality and younger-looking eyes.
Sierra Nevada Ear Nose and Throat offers eyelid surgery in Reno and the surrounding area. Read on for more information about the procedure and call our office to schedule a consultation today.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
Upper blepharoplasty addresses drooping skin that results from excess tissue or impaired musculature in the upper lid. Generally, an incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid, thus minimizing its visibility. Excess skin and/or fat are then removed, the muscles tightened and the area sutured closed.
Lower blepharoplasty addresses excess skin and fat that results in the appearance of “bags” under the eye. Generally, an incision is made along the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid. As is the case with the upper blepharoplasty, excess skin and/or fat are removed, and the area is sutured closed.
Patients may choose to undergo both upper and lower blepharoplasty at the same time.
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure and typically takes less than two hours. A local anesthesia and mild sedative or general anesthesia is required, and patients can expect to spend an additional hour after surgery in monitored recovery.
The overall recovery period is relatively brief. Patients will receive cold compresses and eye drops to assist with any dryness, and the doctor will prescribe pain medication to reduce swelling and discomfort, if needed. A follow-up appointment to remove stitches is typically scheduled for a week after surgery.
Most patients return to work within a week or two and resume normal physical activities in the same timeframe.
Is an Eye Lift Right For Me?
A combination of aging and exposure to the elements can lead to eyelid issues. These issues tend to become more noticeable after the age of 40. Eyelid surgery may be undertaken to improve eyelid function–as is the case when vision is impaired–or for cosmetic reasons.
Blepharoplasty treats conditions such as:
- Excess skin on upper or lower lids
- Drooping or sagging eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
The doctors at Sierra Nevada ENT can help determine if an eye lift is right for you. Prior to blepharoplasty in our Reno or other Northern Nevada offices, the surgeon will meet with you to discuss your medical history. They will perform a physical exam, including eyelid measurements, and a vision exam. In cases where drooping eyelids are obstructing peripheral vision, the procedure may be deemed medically necessary and be eligible for insurance coverage.
Our doctor will also take photographs of your eyelids. Based on this assessment, as well as your desired outcome, they can determine if the procedure is appropriate for you and outline expected results.
Blepharoplasty patients at Sierra Nevada ENT’s Reno and Northern Nevada offices have been delighted with the improved functionality and youthful appearance that can be achieved with an eye lift.
